Your Newborn Photography Session

For those classic curly, sleepy newborn poses, the best time to photograph your baby is within the first 3 weeks. Book your due date with the session fee before baby arrives, so I can offer you the best possible time within those first three weeks. (If baby is older, don’t panic — we still have plenty of options, so get in touch!)

All my newborn sessions are baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding and comforting. Curious which poses to expect? Read my newborn posing guide. Not sure when to book? Read when to book your newborn session.

You can contact EvaGud Photography any time during your pregnancy however, getting in touch at the early stages of your pregnancy guarantees plenty of time to discuss styling and to prepare for your session.

What a Session With Me Feels Like

Hundreds of newborn sessions have taught me exactly how to help your baby settle — no named techniques, just experience.

I allow plenty of time for a newborn session, it usually lasts 2-3 hours, so there’s never any rush. Both parents are welcome, and so are dogs. Family and sibling portraits are woven in at whatever point works best for your baby and the flow of the session — always with an eye on keeping things settled and everyone feeling ready, never rushed in.

There’s water, coffee and biscuits on arrival, and plenty of time to relax before we begin.

What you take home afterwards is entirely yours to decide — digital images, an all-inclusive collection with wall art, a considered piece for your wall, or an album, including the small mini albums grandparents love. My studio holds a wall of real samples to hold and see before you choose.

Most of the families I photograph come back — for the next baby, a first birthday, a Christmas portrait that quietly becomes a yearly tradition. I’ve told every parent who’s walked through my door the same thing: I have the very best job in the world, and all I really want is for you to leave with more than photographs — a morning you actually got to enjoy.

“Eva is a true baby whisperer. From the moment we arrived, our newborn was fully taken care of in her gentle hands for nearly three hours… Eva’s warmth, patience, and professionalism make the whole experience effortless and unforgettable.”

When Should You Get Your New Born Photo Shoot Done?

Newborn Photography Sessions are best done within the first 3 weeks of baby’s life. Contact EvaGud photography newborn photographer in East London after your 20 week scan to ensure plenty of time for styling and to prepare for your session.

This way, it is easier to create those deliciously cute and curly poses that are so lovable. Added to that younger babies don’t mind their clothes being taken off, as long as they are warm and snug.

Getting a photo shoot done before your baby turns 3 weeks old is ideal, since your newborn baby will sleep a lot, is fed on a regular (usually!) 2-hour schedule and doesn’t mind being dressed up (or not) during the shoot. Added to that, at this age, babies naturally settle in those beautiful poses we all love, allowing us to get some really adorable photos.

This does not mean that you cannot have a photoshoot done if your baby is more than 3 weeks old!

There are plenty of options for capturing older babies, that simply require a different approach to the session – so if your newborn baby is older than a few weeks… don’t panic!

Get in touch as soon as possible to discuss your options!

Safety of Newborn Photography

As a professional newborn photographer in East London, my first and foremost consideration during a newborn baby photography session is your baby’s safety. I ensure that the shoot, wherever it may be, is done in such a way that your precious little one is safe and secure at all times.

Here are some of the things I do to ensure that your bundle of joy is absolutely safe during our newborn photo session:

  • I wear no jewellery of any kind during a photo session.
  • I also ensure that my nails are filed and smooth so that there is no chance I could scratch the baby when I am handling him or her.
  • I ensure that my hands are frequently sanitized during the newborn photo session.
  • If I am using props, I always ensure that they are sterilized and safe for a baby to use. Especially if I am using buckets or baskets for the shoot, I ensure that that a weighted sandbag is placed at the bottom so that it doesn’t tip over.
  • I am also aware of the fact that infants are easily startled, so I keep a sharp eye out on their reflexes, especially when they are placed in props.
  • I always ensure that I wear a neck strap when I am using my camera.
  • I never leave a baby untended. If I have to take my eyes of your newborn baby, then I ensure that one of the parents is keeping an eye on the baby at all times.
  • I always ensure that my studio is comfortably warm so that even if your baby is unclothed, he or she will not be cold.
  • My first consideration is your newborn baby’s comfort. So, if there is a pose that seems to cause your little one discomfort, it will be adjusted immediately. I never force a pose. If you request a pose that will be uncomfortable for your baby, or could even pose a danger to him or her, I will not put the baby in that pose.
